Barium is a white colored liquid that coats the lining of the GI tract (ingested by the patient before xrays are taken). This makes it easier to visualize the lining and therefore to detect any abnormalities.

The same principle is used for imaging other parts of the body. For example, they often use an injected dye to highlight tumours and other masses within the brain during a CT scan.
